1 Ljubljana,
Slovenia
Ljubljana is one of the greenest
European capitals offering its residents as well as visitors a wide number of
green areas. For instance, the city center has now closed motor vehicle
traffic.Ljubljana was awarded the title of European Green Capital 2016.Ljubljana
is a city with excellently preserved green spaces and countless green nooks
and cran nies even in the heart of the city centre. The city's picturesque
embankments on the river Ljubljanica, designed by the world famous architect
Joze Plecnik, are surrounded by trees and grassy spaces. Not far away you can
find one of Europe's oldest botanical gardens, more than 200 hundred years
old. Ljubljana, is a green city in more than just one sense of the word. It
has managed to preserve its green character to the present day and welcomes
you to various green areas in the heart of the city.
2 Nin, Croatia
On a small island in the middle of a
shallow lagoon the small town of Nin can be found with its old centre,
connected to the mainland by two stone bridges.Nin has had an exciting past,
and today, has a lovely present.The smallest cathedral in the world and the
coronation Church of St.Nicholas can be found here, as well as one of the
world's most beautiful beaches. Nin has a rich cultural treasure, unspoilt
nature, as well as remarkably beautiful surroundings.
3 Monte Isola,
Italy
Monte Isola is a green mountain
emerging at the centre of Lake Iseo. In every season special, wonderful and
suggestive landscape makes this island of almost 450 hectares a real Italian
pearl. Cars are banned and only the 1,800 inhabitants are allowed to drive
motorcycles. Visitors can use small buses or rent bikes, so as to start the
discovery by cycling along the 9.4 km of the perimeter. It is possible to
explore by foot the bridleways and the footpaths leading to the top of the
island where the sanctuary stands.
4 Mellieha, Malta
According to archaeological
discoveries, the town has been inhabited from Neolithic times to the
Byzantine era, but the area was deserted after the Arab conquest. It was only
during _ the time of the Knights, that Mellieha was once again inhabited.
Surrounded by green plush valleys and the crystal clear blue seas _ of the
Mediterranean, Mellieha is quickly establishing itself as a destination for
all seasons. Whether out for a walk along the rural country trails, visiting
the historic Marian Sanctuary or one of the many local forts dotting the _
dip in the blue coastline, a quick waters of Mellieha Bay or the other 12
surrounding bays, or during one of the very popular activ _ ities organised
by the Mellieha Local Council, this locality has a lot to offer.
5 Kuldiga, Latvia
The beautifully preserved city of
Kuldiga is an ancient, undiscovered jewel of the Latvian countryside. Its
relative isolation has preserved the medieval beauty of the city's old town,
currently a candidate for UNESCO World Heritage listing.Kuldiga was recently
awarded a Vista Prize for its innovation in sustainable tourism, bringing new
festivals, walking tours and biking routes to the city, and helping to revive
centuriesold traditions in local food and wine.
