With Amazon all set
to launch a new version of its Echo smart speaker with a 7-inch touchscreen
tablet on the front, we take a look at some of the best tablets available in
the market right now
Huawei MediaPad
M3
The MediaPad M3 is like a more affordable Apple iPad Mini 4,
that runs Android. The aluminumclad tablet bears a striking resemblance to the
iPad Mini 4 in design, and its performance is just as powerful. However, Huawei
has better speakers and cheaper pricing -for both Wi-Fi only and LTE models.
The speakers are loud, crisp and clear; dialogue in movies was always at the
forefront and vocals in music sounded appropriately accentuated. Additionally,
with the speakers on each end of the Huawei MediaPad M3, it makes for a more
immersive listening experience.
Apple iPad Mini
4
The iPad Mini 4 makes the most of iOS 9 and has a number of
welcome upgrades, but its high price will have some skipping straight up to
larger iPad Air models. Along the side of the iPad Mini 4 is a volume switch,
and a lock button sits along the top; Apple has done away with the rotation
lock slider of the iPad Mini 3. This is in order to make the device slimmer
6.1mm as opposed to 7.5mm and the trade-off is fine by me. It's lighter, too,
by about 30g.On the bottom you'll find the precisely machined speaker holes and
a Lightning charging port. The defining feature of the iPad Mini 4, as its name
implies, is its size. It's far more manageable in one hand than the iPad Air 2
or 9.7-inch iPad Pro, and when placed next to the iPad Pro 12.9-inch the
difference is almost comical.
Google Pixel C
Google Pixel C has a sleek, solid build and features a magnetic
keyboard (sold seperately) that attaches so strongly, you can hold it upside
down and the tablet won't fall. The tablet runs the latest version of Android
and its performance is fast. The screen is sharp, and gaming graphics look
stellar. Its aluminum design is elegant and solid. When combined with its
optional magnetic Bluetooth keyboard, which is made of the same material, the
tablet turns into a productivity-geared hybrid.
iPad Pro (9.7
inch)
iPad Pro delivers a fast processor; a bright, antireflective
display; support for Apple Pencil and Smart Keyboard accessories; better
speakers and top-notch cameras. The iPad relies heavily on its glistening
chamfers to make it standout. There are now two sets of speakers, on both the
top and bottom of the device, along with the clever little smart connector that
pairs the tablet with the Smart Keyboard. It's still not a full-fledged laptop
killer, but the new Pro is the best iPad ever made -a near-perfect balance of
tablet power and portability.
Samsung Galaxy
Tab S3
Galaxy Tab S3 is an elegantly designed tablet that comes with a
capable stylus. It has a stunning AMOLED screen, fingerprint sensor for extra
security and satisfyingly loud quad speakers. But without a keyboard packed in,
it's still more about content consumption than creation. It's also the first
HDR-ready tablet, although there are a few asterisks to that bullet point. Tab
S3 shines best when watching video.
Microsoft
Surface Pro 4
Equipped with robust processing power, a perfectly sized display
and just-right aspect ratio, and a few critical add-on accessories, the Pro 4
solidified the Surface's position as the gold standard for Windows tablets. The
Surface Pro 4 fits a larger screen with a higher resolution into a slightly
slimmer body than last year's model. The pen and keyboard cover are also
improved, and this is one of the first mobile systems shipping with Intel's
latest processors. A host of small refinements cements the Surface Pro 4's
position as the best-in-class Windows tablet -so long as you're prepared to pay
extra for the required keyboard cover accessory.
