THAT AWFUL GUT
FEELING
SOME ALLERGIES are genetic,
while others are caused by a bad diet and poor lifestyle. According to
ayurveda, vata-dominant allergies begin from the intestine, pitta-dominant
allergies affect the skin, and kapha-dominant allergies affect the upper
respiratory tract. However, this is just a broad generalisation. In clinical
practice, they are usually bundled together.
A look at intestinal allergies:
The intestine is one of
the largest barriers to infections and allergies, capable of capturing and
destroying many allergens. In some conditions, this system breaks down.
Eventually, large allergens can enter your inner body.
Factors that break down
the immune system in the gut:
A bad diet Too many
antibiotics and painkillers
Fried foods and diet
sodas Irregular meal timings Mental stress Lack of sleep
Symptoms:
Bloating, spasms, stomach pain, indigestion, irregular bowel
habits, and food intolerance.
Natural solutions
Avoid dairy products for
60 days, and steer clear of coffee, tea and diet drinks, packaged foods,
deep-fried foods, heavy meats, and white sugar for the same period.
However, dried fruits
like raisins and figs are safe to consume.
Drink aloe vera juice
daily (it detoxifies the intestine).
Eat some triphala churan
every night.
Medicated naturopathy
enemas are a good idea but use them under the supervision of a doctor.
Use spices and herbs like
turmeric (it helps heal the inflamed intestine), ginger (it improves liver
function), and cinnamon (it improves gut flora). Drink a liquorice decoction
(it soothes the intestine).
Take enzyme tablets to
restore the gut flora balance. Eat rice khichri with a little organic ghee.
Start eating chyawanprash
when you start feeling better. Practise yoga pranayams, or run, cycle or swim
to relieve stress.
