MANAGEMENT SPECIAL................. VINEET NAYAR

 VINEET NAYAR

It was a chance speech that Vineet Nayar gave at MoonShots, a brain storming session on the future of management organised by Gary Hamel and the late CK Prahalad, that resulted in him writing his book, Employees First, Customer Second. “I was speaking about the importance of focussing on your employees and after the session, Hamel and Prahalad convinced me that this idea needed to go out to the world and I should write about what was happening at HCL,” says Nayar, who has since quit HCL to set up the Sampark Foundation. Nayar now spreads his gospel through Twitter and Facebook and a blog that presents real life examples of day-to-day leadership. He also writes for Harvard Business Review and Fortune, and is signed up with the Washington Speakers Bureau. This makes him an active participant in the global speaker circuit and alongside, Nayar also holds advisory sessions for boards of global companies. “In the current business environment, we need inspired leaders who can create magic outside the box of reason and logic. People need to be stimulated by what they read,” he says. His advice is to read books by people who have managed to do that. A word of caution however. "Reading about it doesn’t mean that you fully understand how to do it," he says.
