The G series of cameras from Canon has always been aimed at enthusiasts who want DSLR-like control and image quality from a compact device. Latest in the series, the G16, is Canon's first compact camera with focus peaking. Focus peaking highlights areas that are in focus when using manual focus — quite useful.
In terms of upgrades, the G16 gets a BSI (back side illuminated) 12MP (1/1.7” size) sensor, a new Digic 6 processor and built in WiFi capability. The overall form factor is similar to the G15. Most buttons and dials are unchanged, though we think that the G16 has a better grip.
Most other specifications remain the same: 5x optical zoom lens with optical image stabilisation, f1.8 - 2.8 aperture, ISO range of 80-12,800 and 9 focus points. With the built-in WiFi you can share images on social networks using Canon's image gateway or connect to a smartphone/tablet to transfer images. However, there is no wireless remote control via the smartphone app.
In terms of performance, the G16 is easily one of the fastest cameras available today. It starts up in a second and locks focus in an instant — very impressive. There is zero shutter lag and the camera does not freeze when writing RAW images to the card during continuous shooting.
As expected, image and video quality is superb. The new star mode for time lapse photography is a welcome addition. Even in low light with ISO 1600, we got great results with minimal noise. The G16 is an impressive camera, but at the same price, also consider Sony's RX 100. The RX 100 has a larger 20MP sensor, 25 focus points but lacks optical viewfinder and WiFi.
