When we reviewed the Acer Iconia W3 tablet earlier this
year, we pointed out a number of issues. With the W4, Acer has addressed every
one of those issues. Our main issue with the W3 was the horrible display. The
display remains an 8-inch, 1280 x 800 pixel unit, but on the W4, you get far
better viewing angles and colour reproduction. However, we did feel it was a
bit too reflective. Also, the default icon and text size is too small for
comfortable viewing. In terms of overall looks, we liked the brushed metal
finish on the rear and dark grey/black colour combination. Another useful
update in the tablet is that instead of a proprietary charger port, it now uses
micro USB.
W4 gives you the full Windows 8.1 experience in an easy-to-carry form factor and is powered by a quad core Intel Atom processor, 2GB RAM and 64GB storage. You can add another 32GB using microSD card. The hardware is good enough to play full HD videos out of the box without installing any additional codecs or software.
Although the tablet has stereo speakers that are adequately loud, we felt that their placement could have been better. Both of them are at the bottom of the tablet. If you're watching videos in landscape mode, audio output is louder from one side. The rear 3MP camera takes images good enough to share on social networks and also records full HD videos in above average quality. With continuous video playback, the tablet gave us an impressive 6 hours plus of battery life. The W4 is unique since no other tablet offers full Windows in this size. You can get 8-inch Android tablets like the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 for the same price or go with a larger Windows tablet from Dell.
