WAYS TO Build a Sense of  Ownership

In the modern corporate environment, where time spent at one company has shortened drastically, it is becoming increasingly important to inculcate a sense of ownership amongst employees to retain talent. Shreya Roy finds out how employees can be made to feel a sense of attachment to what they do
1 Allow for Mistakes
Allowing people to make mistakes is a very important part of building a sense of ownership amongst employees. “In your own business, you are bound to go through trial and error, and you learn from them. Do that with your employees as well. Employees should feel safe and innovate by taking chances,” says Maclean Raphael, executive director — human resources, 3M, India and Sri Lanka.
2 Let Employees Speak Out Employees feel like a part of a greater whole when they can contribute ideas and solutions to problems. Intel, for instance, used crowd-sourcing for inputs on how it could be a better place to work in. “The tool we used to crowd-source allowed employees to rate each other’s inputs, and build on each other’s ideas to make Intel a better place to work,” says Preethi Madappa, HR director, Intel India
3 Clarify where Things are Headed Show employees the ‘big picture’ of the organisation. Share the good news as well as the bad news. “Create visibility, use plain speak, talk about the challenges and explain what you are still trying to figure out in an open and transparent manner,” adds Madappa.
4 Illustrate Benefits Beyond Money Employees need to see long-term benefits, and not just the show of money. “Provide them opportunities for learning and development, ask for contributions through action, thoughts, projects; implement the ones which can be taken up,” says Sangeeta lala, senior vice president and co-founder, TeamLease Services.
5 Show Respect Nothing drives people as much as being treated well, with respect and in a levelplaying field. “It is important to practise equality and diversity across the organisation,” says Lala.
