GADGET GIZMO REVIEW.......................... BLUETOOTH SPEAKERS (2)

GADGET GIZMO REVIEW BLUETOOTH SPEAKERS (2)

4. Creative Airwave
The Airwave is loud, and its audio is sharp; you will even hear the thumps, but you won’t get those bass vibrations – stuff that makes ‘great’ speakers stand out from those that are merely ‘good’. Still, these get the job done. You also get a built-in mic that lets you answer phone calls. While the sound quality at our end was fairly clear during tests, people we called complained of very low volume and echo – this, even when we spoke quite loudly, just a foot away from the device. The Airwave gave us between 10 to 10.5 hours of playback on a single charge. Besides Bluetooth connectivity, the Airwave supports NFC that allows you to connect supporting smartphones with a mere tap. In our tests, this feature worked very well.
RATING 6.5/10    PRICE RS.6,999
Its 10-inch size and weight of almost a kilogram does not make the Airwave extremely portable. But if you’re looking for colourful – available in red, blue, green and black – wireless speakers for your bed side; something that you can carry along on the occasional picnic, these could be it.

5. HDMX Jam Plus
The USP of Jam Plus: Buy two pieces and they connect to each other – as right and left audio channels – to give you stereo sound. The unit is capable of a fair amount of bass (the type you hear, not feel). Just make sure it’s not placed at the edge of a table: During tests, while playing a seven-minute, thumping Club mix, each speaker moved at least half a foot from where they were placed. This is not exactly a deal breaker, but we would have liked them to stay where we left them. At high volumes you will hear some distortion – and trebles may sound a bit harsh, but at the price at which these retail, and given their size, this is more of a norm, than an anomaly.
The Jam Plus, which gives you around four hours on a single charge, does not come with an in-built microphone, so you can’t use it to answer hands-free calls.
RATING 6.5/10  PRICE Rs.3,990
The Jam Plus – available in five colours – is a good buy if you’re shopping on a budget. Invest in two, and you can pair them together for fairly-loud stereo sound.

6. Sony SRS-BTV5
The SRS-BTV5 – about the size of an egg – scores over the others when it comes to extreme portability. It is lightweight and small enough to fit in a lady’s purse. Sound-wise, these speakers, though loud enough to amplify the sound of a tablet or smartphone, do not display any sterling acoustic quality. So if you’re expecting thumping output, you’d be disappointed. Like the Creative Airwave, this speaker, also supports NFC pairing that worked really well with compatible devices. Its inbuilt microphone is one of the best we’ve heard. Hands-free calls sounded clear.
A full charge gave us anything between 3.5 to four hours of playback.
RATING 6 /10  PRICE Rs.3,990

The SRS-BTV5 is a lightweight Bluetooth speaker that promises clear hands-free call quality, in an ultraportable form factor.

7. Jabra Solemate

In pure comparisons, the Solemate’s output is closer to that of the Airwave. But while the Creative handles treble better, and plays louder, the Solemate provides for more bass and warmer tones. We played a variety of music on the Solemate, ranging from a string arrangement of Johann Pachebel’s Canon in D to Ennio Morricone’s overture from A Fistful of Dollars that’s full of bells and whistles (literally), to Shankar Mahadevan’s Breathless with its strong bass intro, and we were more than satisfied.
The device boasts a metal and rubber build quality that makes it dust and splash resistant. Additionally, its rubber sole comprises a notch to store its included 13-inch, 3.5mm audio cable. This base also works to keep the speaker firmly in place, no matter how loud the bass thumps.
Its inbuilt microphone works much better than those in the Creative – and callers found the audio quality to be clear, without any echo.
   RATING 7/10   PRICERs.10,990
If you’re looking for a rugged, portable speaker with a mic for hands-free calls, the Solemate should definitely be in your shortlist.
