Sony Tablet Z
In the crowded world of Android
tablets, it’s very difficult to stand out. With the Tablet Z, Sony has tried
hard to make that distinction. It has the same design aesthetic as the Xperia Z
smartphone – it’s almost like a larger cousin of the phone, except its thinner.
In fact, it’s the thinnest tablet in the world in that size. The screen is
classy and the back is of soft matte graphite. The viewing angles of the Tablet
Z are also improved and don’t white out as you move the tablet around. Colours
are pleasing, though not strong in the contrast and brightness
department.
The Tablet Z is famous for being
waterproof — like the phone. While I think this is a good fringe benefit, I
hardly think its ability to withstand a dunking in water for 30 minutes should
be a deciding factor for purchase.
The expense of the Tablet Z is
something you can’t get away from. It’s for Rs 46,990 and while one may argue
that some variants of the iPad cost that much, I don’t think an Android tablet
has any business being in the same price bracket. This is because there are
really not that many Android tablet-optimised apps on the Play Store. The Z is
a beautiful piece of hardware, but when it comes to apps, there is that big
gap.
Sony’s Tablet Z has put in features like an Infrared
sensor to control your content on the television, a media player etc. There are
other apps, like Sony’s music player, a nice note taker, and usability touches
to the interface that make this tablet different. It performs well and has an
average battery life. There’s a 2.2MP front camera and an 8MP primary — both
