TECH REVIEW................ Olympus Tough TG-2

TECH REVIEW Olympus Tough TG-2

PRICE 22,990
If the looks didn't give it away, the TG-2 is a rugged camera with a weather sealed body. All ports are locked behind waterproof flaps and the lens is protected by an additional sheet of glass. The zoom mechanism is internal and perhaps is one of the reasons for the limited 4x optical zoom. A textured rubber grip ensures that you can hold it even when wet. To test the shockproof capability, we dropped the camera from varying heights up to 4 feet and there were no visible scuff marks or issues in operating. We even dunked the camera in 2 ft of water (it takes beautiful photographs in the underwater mode). Around the back is a 3-inch display that doubles up as the viewfinder. Being an OLED display, it is easy to view underwater. All the control buttons and mode dial ring are placed neatly alongside the display.
The 12MP CMOS sensor is capable of recording full HD video. The images taken from the camera are fantastic — sharp with vivid colours. The f2.0 fast aperture is useful for low light as well as underwater shooting. The camera has an aperture priority mode and various scene modes, but it lacks a full manual mode. In video recording, we noticed that the camera took time to adjust to changes in light. This leads to the video being overexposed or underexposed in parts. There are very few options when it comes to rugged compact digital cameras. Olympus’s TG-2 impresses with great performance, fantastic design and sturdy construction but has a few flaws. For a lower price, consider the Nikon AW110 with 16MP sensor & 5x optical zoom.
