JOB SPECIAL........... First day job blues

 First day job blues

EVERY NEW JOINEE WANTS TO MAKE A POSITIVE FIRST IMPRESSION ON THE FIRST DAY OF WORK. ARE YOU MAKING ONE

THE DAY 1 CHECKLIST:

MAHESH ARAS, MD, HR, JP Morgan gives you a checklist that every new joinee should carry on the very first day to work:

• The first month at your new job is a time to learn and get to know the organisation,its people,systems and processes.Let learning be your number one priority.Listen more.Talk less;
• Get to know the organisation in as much detail as possible;
• Meet people.Meet internal and external stakeholders to understand their expectations;
• Get to know your team.Understand what makes it click;
• Avoid comparisons with and frequent references to your previous organisation;
• Don’t try to prove yourself on day one.The fact that you were hired is proof enough that you have what it takes.Give yourself time;
• Familiarise yourself with the new premises.Find out where various departments are located,common areas,cafeteria,meeting rooms,etc;
• Be conservative and guarded in your early days.

THE HOMEWORK:

ASHWIN SHIRALI,
regional director, HR, Accor Hotels, India emphasises the need to do your due diligence before day one by seeking answers to the following questions. This can be sought by speaking with colleagues, if any in the organisation, or anyone who can throw light on the various aspects of the new organisation:

• What is the culture like? Is it transparent, family-oriented, bureaucratic or casual?
• Is the management style participative, democratic, autocratic or delegatory?
• Who are the key decision-makers and opinion-makers?
• Who do you steer clear of and relate to only as far as work is concerned?
• What are the expected social behaviours and strict paths where you should never tread? .

..AND NOW THE CRUCIAL PART:

UNMESH PAWAR, senior VP, HR, Accenture India BPO emphasises the key points that are often overlooked, but help in carving a positive impression on day one at work:

• Time arrival on the first day. Always arrive a few minutes early;
• Step up your company research. Learn about its mission, line of business, and culture from an employee’s perspective;
• Communicate professionally. Make a point to enunciate your words and project your voice. Avoid using slang;
• Take notes.Write down everything from names and positions to daily tasks and expectations;
• First opinions are often based on appearance and body language. It is best to check with the HR manager on the office dress code.When in doubt, it is always advisable to dress in smart formals;
• On the first day, you should introduce yourself to everyone, so that colleagues take notice of your arrival and understand your role in the company
