TECH /GADGET REVIEW ..................HCL Beanstalk AD1V0038

HCL Beanstalk AD1V0038

Attractiveness is a quality fast gaining momentum when it comes to all-in-one PCs – and not without reason. Even if you have a limited budget for a home PC and prefer the space-saving design of an all-in-one, why would you want something that looks drab?
HCL newest device takes up the challenge and manages to look fresh — kind of like the ‘monolithic’ design that certain new LED TVs have. It’s essentially a frameless design, with the screen taking up most of the frontal area. It's also the only all-in-one with a built in battery — so no need for a UPS. However, there is no touchscreen option available, which is a shame.
This particular design, available in three variants (our review unit being the top-of-the-line) only comes with Windows 7 Home Premium, so it’s just as well that a touchscreen is not an option. The screen is high quality and has a native resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels (full HD). Most, if not all of the components (including a slim DVD drive) are built into the stand. The design is such that the screen can be adjusted to many different angles (but there is no height adjustment). Performance is adequate for most uses (except high-end games). It scores a respectable 4.6 on the Windows Experience Index with predictably the lowest score for graphics.
Surprising that HCL has bundled a very cheap-looking wired keyboard and mouse — seems completely mismatched with the device itself. The keyboard-mouse is the same basic kind you could find for a few hundred Rupees at any computer shop. You will most certainly want to buy a wireless set (about 1,500 extra).
The two biggest differentiators here are the design and battery. If you want something with better hardware, Windows 8 & touchscreen, get Acer’s new Aspire 5600U.
