EDUCATION SPECIAL..CAREERS IN DESIGN

  DESIGN YOUR FUTURE

Education Times, in association with Edit Silica Institute, recently conducted a seminar on careers in the field of design. Kavita Redkar addressed a few queries of students at the event

Can a hobby in drawing and design become a career?
If a student is interested in drawing and creative activities, it is the first indicator that he/ she may be suited for a design career. The best way to determine the right design career would be to take a Design Aptitude Test which will test general creativity but also specific aptitude required for a particular design career. Unfortunately, the standard Psychometric Aptitude Tests focus only on the logical and numeric aptitude of a child and fail to test the creative aptitude. The Design Aptitude Test should ideally be done during class X or XI.
How do I evaluate if a career in designing will have good scope?
It is important to consider one’s aptitude and interest along with the future opportunities before making a career decision. It is a fact that conventional careers like engineering, medicine and accounting are saturated with professionals. On the other hand, there is demand for design professionals, especially in a growing economy like India. There are about 50 different career options such as architecture, product design, automobile design, fashion design, textile design, animation, interior design etc. The starting salary for a fresh design graduate from premier institutes such as NID, NIFT, Srishti, MIT etc is in the range of Rs 6-14 lakh per annum, with a fast growth ahead.
Could you list a few design institutes in the country along with the various programmes they offer and their entrance exam patterns?
A number of schools in the country offer courses in design. Here are a few: National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad - NID is an internationally acclaimed design institution offering eight disciplines at undergraduate and 17 disciplines at postgraduate courses in industrial design, communication design, textile, apparel and lifestyle accessory design, IT integrated design, retail management and strategic design management. National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) - With 15 centres across the country, NIFT offers graduate programmes in fashion design, accessory design, textile design, fashion communication, etc and postgraduate programmes in management and design space.
Top art and architecture colleges: JJ School of Art, Rachana Sansand, CEPT (Ahmadabad) NIT, Nagpur. Other design schools in India – Bangalore: Srishti; Pune: DSK, Symbiosis Institute of Design (SID), MIT, SOFT; New Delhi: Pearl (indicative listing).
Every design school has a different pattern for its individual entrance examination.
When should one start preparing for an entrance examination to design schools?
Ideally, a student should start preparing for the design school entrance exam post class X. As these exams are competitive, one needs to undergo a two-year preparation and practice. Moreover, nothing related to the design entrance syllabus is covered during schooling till class X.
What about the career options in design and the number of seats available at postgraduate level?
At postgraduate level apart from fashion design, there are two main streams—visual communication and industrial design. In industrial design, specialisations offered are, product design, automobile and
transportation design, furniture and interior design, ceramic and glass design, etc. Engineering and architecture students can ideally choose these specialisations. In communication design, the specialisations offered are graphics, film and video, animation, photography, new media, software interface design, IT integrated design.
BA, BSc, BCom, BCA, BCS students can do post graduation in graphics, film and video, animation, photography, toy and game design, new media and retail space design.
Some of the schools to consider Postgraduation in Design in India are IIT-Industrial Design Center (IDC) and National Institute of Design (NID), which have about 300 seats.
Other design schools for product and automobile design (seats = 100) are MIT Institute of Design, Srishti, DSK Supinfocom. Each of these schools conduct a stringent entrance examination covering written test, studio test and interview with portfolio presentation.
Which foreign universities offer courses in design and what is the admission procedure for entry to these courses?
There are universities like Coventry, UK, for Automobile, IED, Italy, for fashion design, Sheridian, Canada, for animation and Parsons School of Design, USA, for architecture to name a few. For admission to colleges abroad you need to have a strong design portfolio which has to be created based on observational art/ design, conceptual art/ design and home assignment given specifically by the respective foreign university.
