YOUTH SPECIAL....The Secret to Looking AND FEELING Younger

The Secret to Looking AND FEELING Younger

Here are 10 tips for you to look and feel younger. Bright colours, small polka dots, spiked hair — go for them
Wear the Right Colours
Bright colours are associated with young people, but that should not stop you from wearing them. Having said that, as you mature, it’s always best to wear one dominant colour instead of too many together. This makes you look less cluttered and a lot sharper. Experiment with new colours, even though some of them may seem unconventional. Most of us tend to restrict our palette to red, blue or green. Try others: purple, pink, saffron, yellow, copper and rust. Match these with varying shades of grey and brown. If you are obsessed with wearing black, white, grey and navy blue, mix and match them instead of wearing them as monotones.
Strong colours and pastel shades highlight the skin and its flaws a lot more, so it’s best to always wear matt, dull and dark tones.

Choose the Right Prints
Wear small, simple and subtle prints. However flamboyant your personality, refrain from a print that draws too much attention away from you. While almost everyone can and does wear stripes, you should slowly introduce digital or modern abstract prints into your wardrobe. Occasionally, you can also wear small polka dots, geometric patterns, toys or superheroes and floral prints. But do not wear two contrasting prints together. Prints should never be too big as they can change the proportions of your body and highlight areas that are best kept hidden.
If you like embroidery as a detail on collars and borders, never wear too much of it. A small amount of fine embroidery says a lot more than too much of it.

Pay Special Attention to the Fit
Be in touch with your body and notice the small but obvious changes. Alter, change or replace clothes that don’t fit like they used to or they should. Clothes only look good when they fit well. An important way to look like you are keeping up is to wear the right sizes. A good garment is one that moves with you and not on you. Never look too squeezed in — anything that brings out the extra creases, folds, or layers, needs to be put away. If you have started to sag in places where most of us at some point do, choose styles, cuts and fabrics that don’t stick too close to the body.
A comfort or relaxed fit is ideal.

Make the Right Combinations
Do not randomly experiment with clothes and accessories like you did when you were younger. Go with your instinct before trying something new. If you are in doubt, stick to your tried, tested and trusted options. Avoid mixing your day garments with your evening wear or your casual clothing with formal. Similarly, never mix a tight and loose fit together — when we get older, it’s either one or the other. Fusion clothing works only in small doses and never when taken to the extreme. Flaunt either a distinctly Indian or western silhouette, than staying in-between.
Drop the ‘I don’t care how I look anymore’ attitude — the less eccentric and more universally acceptable your look, the better.

Pick the Right Styles
Want to experiment with something unconventional? Ensure the setting is right, then don’t hold back from making that strong statement or having that creative outburst. As we tend to get typecast by our style, it’s always good (and never too late) to show people your dark or other side. Don’t make any effort to look half your age. Always dress your age. Beyond a point, women should avoid off shoulders, low backs, deep or plunging necklines and mini skirts while men should refrain from wearing muscle and V-neck tops or second-skin jeans and trousers. Use your basic knowledge and experience when you shop. Most older people end up with the wrong choice of cuts and styles.
Tailor-made garments are a better option, especially if you don’t fit into or like conventional off-the-counter designs.

Put on the Right Accessories
One prominent piece is always better than many. This could be a good watch, fine jewellery, striking tie, coloured pocket square or just a simple pair of cufflinks. As a general rule, avoid very bold colours, loud prints and oversized designs. Men must match and coordinate the colour and materials of the belt and shoes. Women should avoid eye-popping clips, headbands and other accessories. Belts should be devoid of large buckles, sunglasses should be slim and sleek, and shoes must always be flat and closed. Handbags and carry cases must be as flat, small and as simple as possible. If you do wear glasses, choose a rimless frame as they draw attention from fine lines on the face.

 Keep Up with the Trends
Take cues from seasonal trends — try and incorporate elements that suit you as an individual as well as match your personality and fit into your lifestyle. Keep an eye out for changes — observe what people are wearing. A new print, colour or style should be introduced gently and subtly. Start with a small change — maybe a tie or a scarf, or a belt. If you feel confident, take things to the next level. Update from this new element as and when necessary.
Find & follow your style icon. Better still, become your own.

Change the Hairstyle
Change your hairstyle every few years. Choose a new low-maintenance style and don’t hold back from trying something radical or new. Yes, spikes do look as good on mature men as they do on their sons. They also work brilliantly with suits. If you are a woman, a short sharp bob or a layered shoulder-length will make you look just a little older than your teenaged daughter. For colouring, start by concealing the first few visible strands. To keep the change looking real and subtle, gradually go from brown to black and leave some obvious strands devoid of any colour at all.
If you are losing hair in the centre, never keep the sides heavy.

Target the Skin
No anti-ageing product works as well as a moisturiser. Apply a generous amount to the face and body every night. To remove visible wrinkles, lines and crow’s feet, apply a small amount of cocoa butter-based formulations. Then apply any natural facemask once every week to cleanse and close the open pores. Mature women need to use a concealer and liquid foundation as a make-up base. This works magically to hide fine lines, dark spots, pigmentation and minor flaws and imperfections.
If opting for an anti-ageing treatment, do check about side effects.

Work the Body
Follow a regular fitness routine — be it walking, running, stretching, doing yoga, working out or playing sports. You will need to find the time and make the effort to follow this through. A glass of warm water with lime juice and honey (if you are not prone to acidity or diabetic) on an empty stomach (first thing in the morning) can do wonders for the body and skin. A fortnightly massage will promote blood circulation and revitalise the body and tired muscles. To nourish the skin, use a combination of argan and carrot seed oil. I wouldn’t consider this pampering yourself but an essential part of your lookingyounger grooming regimen. Regular manicures and pedicures will ensure that your hands and feet continue to look fresh and well maintained. Prevent wrinkles on your hands, fingers, toes and feet by applying a heavy-duty hand or foot cream.

Stimulate the mind while you are it.
Read a book, watch a movie, play a board game, meet old (or try and make new) friends, or just take a quiet solo walk or a well deserved weekend break. It’s proven that stimulating the mind keeps you younger!
