Panasonic CF-C2 Toughbook

The CF-C2 Toughbook holds the distinction of being the world’s first, semi-rugged, convertible Windows 8 laptop. The triple hinge design allows the 12.5-inch screen to swivel around completely — and the screen is touch and digitizer enabled — a stylus is provided and it slots into the side. Like most laptops in this class, it can withstand an unbelievable amount of abuse but is quite bulky and heavy. Looks are subjective — while most don’t think it’s very pretty to look at, we think the black-matte silver combination design is purposeful and sort of has an industrial appeal.
You get the usual Toughbook goodies — a spill-resistant keyboard and touchpad, drop protection, strengthened glass (outdoor viewable) LCD, TPM hardware-based encryption technology and a hot swap battery. A nice touch is the removable rubberised hand grip on the underside that lets you hold the 1.8kg machine with one hand. In clamshell mode, you can easily walk with it without fear of it slipping out of your hand.
Specs are pretty good too: Core i5, 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD and Intel HD4000 graphics with a generous helping of ports. It has USB 3.0 ports, HDMI, Ethernet, VGA, card reader and a 720p HD webcam. Battery life is roughly 10 hours with the standard 6-cell battery.
As you may have gathered, the CF-C2 is not really for those who have desk jobs. It comes into its own when being used on shop floors, at airports, large warehouses, by mobile healthcare professionals or even by the military/ armed forces. It really doesn’t have any direct competition, so if you need a truly sturdy, touch-enabled Windows 8 convertible laptop, this is the way to go. You can also consider the Toughbook CF-AX2 Ultrabook if you need something lighter.
