CAREER SPECIAL..Five Ways To Prepare for Appraisals

CAREER SPECIAL..Five Ways To Prepare for Appraisals

Most of us tend to think of a performance appraisal as a necessary evil. But approached in the right way, they can turn out to be a great opportunity to obtain feedback, support and future direction.
1 Get Organised
Instead of a last-minute effort, it’s always better to prepare thoroughly before the review meeting. Get reference documents, lists and required evidence in place, says Meenakshi Roy, senior VP — HR, Reliance Broadcast Network. “You need to ensure that relevant facts and figures are accurate,” she adds.
2 Make a List
You need to analyse performance targets that involve your scope of work, role within the organisation, responsibilities and so on. “If you have faced challenges or have accomplished extraordinary tasks, you need to list them for discussion,” says Roy.
3 Keep an Open Mind
Take corrective feedback in a positive way, says Randeep Singh Sisodia, director — HR, Amway India. “Go with the assumption that you will discover a few things about yourself and learn things that will help you become a better professional,” he says.
4 Record Failures
One must also objectively state the tasks one failed at or could have done better. “That will project a person as someone who has a balanced and mature perspective,” says Sisodia.
5 Seek Development
Identify areas where you would like to hone your skills and expertise. Speak to your appraiser about the support you need to develop yourself, in sync with your career plans.
