WORKPLACE SPECIAL....WORK FROM HOME

Work Gets a New Meaning

The trend of working from one’s home — if not from one’s hometown — is certainly picking up in India. Compared with other segments, it is definitely the initiative of the knowledge industry, where the potential to work from home is much higher. I wonder whether this can work across various segments and for all jobs. In any case, this is to be experimented. People like James Joseph needs to share the knowledge of how he did this successfully so that more professionals are encouraged to follow in his footsteps.
When it comes to working from remote locations or from one’s hometown, opportunities are not confined to CXOs. There are many types of jobs at the middle level, too. For example, in the case of banks, functions such as planning, strategy, analytics, credit analysis, risk management and a lot of routine monitoring can be done from home — be it in a metro or elsewhere. Joseph’s experiment can be a game-changer. He can really help corporations and individuals to initiate an effort to improve the quality of life, boost work-life balance and even enhance productivity. In a country like India, such an effort can reduce the burden on our transport system. Increasingly, this will be a global trend across industries. However, we have to be cautious: the new class of such employees should not get isolated from the mainstream and alienated from the centre of an organisation. I will rather go for a 50-50 approach: work from home or hometown for 15 days and rest from the office.
Working from one’s home or hometown can immensely benefit women employees post-maternity. Many competent executives resign or refuse promotions because of the compulsion of going to office. Organisations in private and public sectors should identify jobs that can be performed from home. By doing so, we can revolutionise the way we work.
