HEART DAY SPECIAL (1) ...Simple steps to a healthy heart

Simple steps to a healthy heart

Faced with an increase in the number of heart patients, cardiologists feel a few lifestyle changes will help reverse this scene

In the last few years, the number of cases of heart diseases have gone up. However, cardiologists from the city believe that if one takes good care of himself by bringing about few changes in his lifestyle, heart diseases will stay away. On World Heart Day, we list five ways that will help one stay healthy:

Avoid smoking and alcohol:
Smoking and consuming liquor are one of the major causes of heart attacks. Often while attending social gatherings, people tend to drink more. However, doctors say one must always drink in moderation. Dr Mahesh Singh, cardiac surgeon at Fortis Hiranandani hospital, Vashi, says, “ When you are surrounded by people who are heavy drinkers, one tends to consume more alcohol. Regular consumption of alcohol can weaken heart muscles.”

Lead a stress-free life:
Leading an active and stress-free life is very important as it keeps your heart healthy. Taking into consideration the current times, cardiologists believe that stress management is very important. Eating well and exercising regularly will also help one to lead a stress-free life.
One must learn to juggle appropriately between work pressures and tensions at home. There are instances when stress levels are bound to rise. In such cases one must always consult a doctor.

Eat well:
Eating the right kind of food is very essential to stay healthy and fit. One's diet must comprise food that is low on cholesterol.
Dr Sanjeevkumar Kalkekar, interventional cardiologist at MGM New Bombay hospital, Vashi, and assistant professor at MGM Medical College, Kamothe, says, “A person must not consume more than half a litre of oil in a month. This means that every day one must not exceed 2-3 tsp of oil. Eating green vegetables and fruits every day and in large proportions is equally important.”

Exercise regularly:
Dr James Thomas, cardiac surgeon and vice-chancellor of DY Patil Vidyapeeth says brisk walking for at least half-an-hour daily reduces cholesterol levels which in turn keeps the heart healthy.
Obese people must make it mandatory to walk for at least a minimum of one to two hours daily, while others can walk for 45minutes at least.
Other physical activities such as swimming and skipping also help one to stay fit.
Go for routine health check-ups:
Young or old, everyone must go for health check ups regularly. This helps in detecting heart ailments at an early stage and also avoids future complications.
