ENTREPRENEUR/STARTUP SPECIAL...LESSON NO.22 FROM REAL EXAMPLES

Voice Applications on Cloud

PALLAV PANDEY
Co-founder, Knowlarity

Knowlarity, a cloud telephony company, was founded in 2009 by Ambarish Gupta and Pallav Pandey. The two IIT-ians pooled in their experiences of working at global consulting firm McKinsey to launch the new venture. They decided to address the need for technology for India’s small and medium enterprises, creating a platform for voice application services hosted on the cloud or common servers. Knowlarity hosts a number of telephony products that are sold through a common direct and channels sales network. The company also plans to expand its sales force to reach a wider set of enterprise businesses across India. As the start-up has grown, it has received multiple rounds of investment, including the most recent round of $6.5 million from Sequoia Capital. The company plans to use a portion of the capital for research and development, along with boosting sales networks. As the company will handle large call volumes in the future, there is a need to develop products to meet it. They also have a roadmap to churn out more products to help automate key processes of enterprise businesses. The next big step for the company is to expand its services to overseas markets. The major challenge that the founders foresee is in replicating the same business model across different global scenarios.
